Preventive Paediatrics
This is a specialized branch of Pediatrics which aims at preventing ill health, promoting optimum development and ensuring the early detection of abnormalities. This Department was established first time in south Punjab in The Children's Hospital & The Insitute of Child Health Multan in June 2005.
The Department of Preventive Pediatric is looking after following important and vital facets of pediatrics.
Outdoor
The outdoor based health services of the special reference to the discipline of preventive pediatrics are Growth and Development Monitoring Clinic. Nutrition Clinic, Genetic Clinic, Vaccination Center, and Lactation Clinic. The department also provides family planning advices in collaboration with district family planning wing.
Growth and Development Monitoring and Promotion
Anthropometric examination is carried out on all children referred to the department. The findings are plotted on growth charts. The mentally retarded and CP children are also examined and parents are counseled that how to manage these children. They are rehabilitated for improvement.
Malnutrition & Nutrition Clinic
Malnourished children without complications are rehabilitated at outdoor basis. Therapeutics diets and micronutrients mix sachets are given on outdoor basis for children with malnutrition and regular follow-up is advised. Mothers are taught and demonstrated different nutritional recipes like high density diets and of easy homemade complementary foods for their malnourished children.
Immunization
Immunization is being done according to the recent EPI schedule of both mothers and children. A vaccination card is issued to keep the record of the vaccination of the children.
Notification of Infectious Disease
In case of presentation of any case of infection disease in the hospital the case is reported and notified to the district health office by the department. In this way they are helped to control and eradicate the diseases.
Genetic Clinic
Genetic clinic is running in which the children with different syndromes especially Down’s syndrome are examined and followed and their parents are advised how to monitor and train these children.
Health Education
Health education is given to mothers presenting in the department and to the mothers who are staying with the children admitted in the ward every day on topics such as sanitation, immunization, Breast Feeding, Nutrition, ORS, Personal Hygiene, Child spacing.
Outpatient Therapeutic Centre
Outpatient therapeutic center was established in December 2011 to deal with uncomplicated SAM. Ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF) is provided to SAM children for home and weekly follow ups are required for monitoring and provision of RUTF till children achieve required W/H.
Breast Feeding Clinic
In the OPD the mothers are taught about the importance of breast feeding. They are told about the proper technique of breast feeding.
Indoor
Nutrition Stabilization Centre
Nutrition Stabilization Centre was established December 2011, at Children Hospital and institute of Child Health Multan to provide specialized WHO recommended care to critically ill malnourished children with children age 1 month to 5 years with complicated SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition). Breast feeding is also established or re-established in children less than six months. Therapeutic milks F75 and F100 and Ready to use therapeutic feed is used to treat severely ill malnourished admitted children at ward. There they are rehabilitated and monitored continuously to overcome the infection and the weight gain is observed. Mothers are also advised and monitored how to feed such FTT children and what to feed.
Diarrhea Bay (HUT)
In this ward (HUT) the children are admitted who need hospitalization. Patients with acute gastroenteritis, acute hepatitis, and Enteric fever are admitted and treated and after recovery they are discharged with advice about breast feeding, personal hygiene and sanitation, complementary diets, immunization and ORS preparation.
ORT corner is set in Diarrhea bay to rehydrate children with some dehydration.
Out Reach Station Activities
SOS Village
SOS Village is provided the health facilities and department monitors the health, nutrition and growth of the children who live there.
District Women Jail Multan
District women jail Multan is visited and monitor the children living in the jail along with their mothers. They are examined for diseases and micronutrients deficiencies. Common health issues of children at jail are anemia, respiratory illnesses and scabies.
Community based monitoring of Children
In this program the aim is to screen malnourished children from community. For this purpose slum of Sharifpura is selected and worked has started in collaboration with DHO, LHS, LHW’S.
